Major Attractions in Ella

Ella Rock
A trekker’s delight, Ella Rock is a gem of a trek which is worth all the effort. A two hour hike up leads to the summit of 1041 meters where wisps of clouds float by you as you enjoy the panoramic spread before you.

Ravana Waterfalls
The scenic trek to the Ravana Falls certainly matches the beauty of the cascading falls. Named after the mythological villain from the Ramayana, the folklore goes that he kidnapped and hid Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, in caves behind the falls. These caves are known as Ravana Ella Caves or Sitha Caves. Another legend goes that the pool below the falls is the place where Ravana’s wife Mandodari took her baths.

Little Adam’s Peak
An easygoing hike from Ella, the views from the tiny perch leveled at 1141 meters are simply beyond words. Shades of green stretch below you flickering in the golden sunlight and contrasting with the piercing blue of the sky where cottony clouds float in abandon. Little Adam’s peak should surely be on your Ella itinerary.

Nine Arches Bridges
The Nine Arches Bridge is a charming construction set in a beautiful backdrop. A popular legend goes that during its construction, the Great War broke out and the British diverted the steel required for the bridge towards war effort and this bridge was completed by the local craftsmen using only stones and cement. The bridge has survived ravages of time and is still operational. Certainly a piece of architectural marvel!

Dhowa Cave Temple or Dhowa Raja Maha Vihara
This beautiful temple in the cave complex near Bandarawela dates back to the 1st century BC. Once a sanctuary for King Valagamba during his exile; this striking structure boasts of an ornate gateway and a 38 ft image of Buddha carved from a rock. The walls & ceilings of the caves are embellished with stunning paintings.

Best Time to Visit Ella
The dry weather from March to June and the winters from December to February is the best time to visit Ella.

By Air- The nearest airport is Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo around 210 kilometers from Ella.
By Rail- A train journey to Ella amidst the picturesque towns is the best way to reach Ella. It is well-connected by rail with Colombo and other parts of the country.
By Road- Ella is connected by a good network of roads to various parts of the country. Buses & hired taxis are easily available for travel.
