Sigiriya Rock Fortress & City
Often considered the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, the ruins of the capital of King Kashyapa (Kassapa), lie on the slopes & summit of a 200 meter high rock. A combination of a palace & a fortress, Sigiriya (Lion Rock), built in 5th century AD, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The imposing rock fortress, taking its name from the lion paws carved at the entrance, is an awesome sight. Colorful tapestry-like frescos painted on the rock face, and the terraced summit offering a astounding views of the mist shrouded forests, are sure to overwhelm you. Its delightful grooves, nicks & crevices, conceal cherished pieces of the past while its splendid gardens & cave shrines depict the culture & history of Sri Lanka.
Pidurangala Rock & Monastery
Pidurangala, situated around 2 kilometers from Sigiriya, is definitely an imposing sight to behold. According to history, the monks inhabiting the area for centuries were moved to this renovated & expanded monastery in Pidurangala. The trek up to the rock is through the temple and runs through Sigiriya-like staircases and a huge image of a reclining Buddha. The summit rewards you with awe-inspiring views & scenic vistas.
Sigiriya Museum
The museum gives an insight into the history & culture of Sri Lanka and Sigiriya. The highlight would be the three dimensional model of the Sigiriya fortress along with its pretty gardens & ponds; recreated from the evidences gathered during excavations. Be sure to stopover at the museum before visiting the fortress for a perfect Sigiriya experience.
Kudagala Forest Reserve & Monastery
Kudagala, located around two hrs from Sigiriya, in Dehiattakandiya, is often known as Kuda-Sigiriya for its drip ledged caves festooned with murals & frescos. The 2000 year old monastery with its remnants of colorful murals and the ruins of its statue & Stupa echo of history & culture ravaged by time.
Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park, located in the North Central Province, is the largest elephant gathering ground in the world and a perfect place to get up-close-and- personal with the Sri Lankan elephant. Take a safari in the gathering months from June to October and you will surely be treated with scores of majestic elephants feeding near the Minneriya Tank. Leopards, wild boar, purple faced monkey, sloth bear and many species of migratory birds & water fowls also inhabit this park.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Situated around two hours from Sigiriya, Pinnawala is a perfect locale for a date with wild Asian elephants! Pinnawala is the salvation of abandoned or orphaned baby elephants and adult elephants lost in the wilderness. Watch the adorable elephants splashing in waters and bottle feed the baby elephants for an incredible experience.
Best Time to Visit Sigiriya
Travel to Sigiriya is best in the months of dry season from June to August and then from December to February.
