Major Attractions of Hatton
Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada)
This tall conical mountain is a major pilgrimage destination for three religions in Sri Lanka. A depression resembling a huge footprint is located near the summit of this 2,243 meters high mountain. The Buddhists venerate it as Lord Buddha’s footprint while the Hindus & the Muslims consider it to be Lord Shiva’s & Adam’s respectively. The arduous climb of over 5000 steps is not only spiritually enlightening but also gives way to scenic vistas. Thousands of devotees throng the site and climb its trails to reach this picturesque & sacred destination.
Devon Falls
Set amidst lush green mountain foliage & misty hills and named after a British coffee planter, Devon Falls are considered to be the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. The experience of water cascading at a height of 97 meters is definitely accentuated by sips of hot cuppa from the nearby shop!
Saint Clair’s Falls
Aptly tagged as the “Little Niagara of Sri Lanka”, St Clair’s falls, cascading at the height of 80 meters from the rustic backdrop of Saint Clair’s Tea Estate, are a perfect sight to behold. The tumbling falls, harmonizing with the misty mountains, are an allure for travelers and locals alike.
Mlesna Tea Castle
The world's largest Tea House resembles a medieval castle up in the hills and is a favorite place with both adults & children. A huge tea gift shop, with an assortment of products ranging from fragrant brews to tiny tea scoops & gold plated tea pots; it sure spoils you for choice! A tea museum, a tea bar serving different flavors of tea & snacks, a viewing tower and a kid’s play area, make Mlesna a hotspot on Hatton travel itinerary.
Singhamalai Tunnel
The thrilling, chilling experience of a mountain train rolling into a dark tunnel is an adventure for adults & kids alike. The train travelling from Colombo to Badulla braves a total of 46 tunnels, the longest one in the hill town of Hatton. Earlier named the Poolbank Tunnel after the Poolbank Estate spread over it, this 562 meters long tunnel is now known as Singhamalai after a lion shape rock in the area. Designed by Sir Guilford Lindsey Molesworth, this mid 19th century heritage tunnel, drilled from both ends, was an engineering feat of the time.
